Socio-physiological elements of conflict and violence in Mexican couples: This project seeks to identify the social and biological variables involved in acts of violence experienced by stable couples. It attempts to identify the cycle of violence, from small conflicts, their escalation, to the passive and active involvement of both members of the couple. As these are processes with multiple causes, the project considers the general characteristics of relationships, such as levels of attraction, commitment, intimacy, satisfaction, sexual behavior, gender identity, possibility of alternatives, attribution, as well as individual characteristics. The project examines different stages and approaches to basic, applied and intervention research.

Mutual Intercultural Relationships in Plural Societies: Acculturation was first characterized by anthropologists as a cultural phenomenon (Redfield, Linton & Herskovits, 1936), and was defined as the change produced by the contact between two autonomous and independent cultural groups. In principle, each culture should influence the other equally, although as a practical matter, one tends to dominate the other when they come into contact, which produces the distinction between the "dominant" group and the "accultured" group (or non-dominant group); the latter being the type that undergoes the most changes. According to Berry (1980, 2003), there are four different ways in which people adjust to a cultural context, also known as acculturation strategies: assimilation, integration, separation and marginalization. Within the acculturation process, it is believed that processes such as social desirability, in which individuals make conscious and unconscious efforts to project themselves positively before others and to give the impression that they have socially desirable qualities (Domínguez & Van de Vijver, 2014; Paulhus, 2002), could be mediating the choice of one acculturation strategy over another in non-dominant groups. Thus, social desirability could constitute an instrument of harmonious adaptation and social approval, the ability to manage self-image within different social contexts to achieve successful integration. Some researchers have found that this acculturation process is associated with personality and health variables such as depression (González, Hann & Hinton, 2001), smoking behavior (Berman et al. 2003), alcohol abuse and risky sexual behavior (Snowden & Hines, 1999), substance abuse (Blake et al., 2001), high stress levels (Buddington, 2002), and symptoms of depression (Ramos, 2005), among others, which indicates that choosing among acculturation strategies directly impacts an individual's mental and physical health. For this reason, this project explores theoretical models to explain this process of choosing between acculturation strategies in non-dominant groups based on the evaluation of their context and their desire to belong or not belong; as well as how this choice leads to a series of consequences that manifest themselves in ways of thinking, acting, and feeling that directly impact an individual's well-being. The verification of these models will lead to understanding of the process of social integration/rejection in culturally diverse societies.
Disability, Technology and Inclusion: This proposal is aimed at answering the question: Can technical aids, designed to meet the personal and contextual needs of people with a disability (motor, intellectual and sensorial) help to improve their educational processes and thus facilitate their social inclusion? Children with disabilities are among the most excluded social groups in the world. They are more likely to have worse health conditions than the general population and are at a greater risk of living in poverty, as they face more challenges than their peers without disabilities. One of the most alarming forms of exclusion is educational exclusion: it is estimated that fewer than 10% of disabled children in developing countries attend school [1]. In this context, technical aids become particularly relevant. Technical Aids (TAs) are defined as devices, didactic materials, strategies and services that disabled people can use to: (a) support their learning, (b) make their surroundings more accessible, (c) increase their independence, (d) improve their quality of life, or (e) improve their working conditions [3] TAs make the difference for disabled children between fully exercising their rights as individuals and being dispossessed of these rights. They represent a key element in moving towards comprehensive inclusion of people with disabilities [4]. How do they intend to address and solve the problem? Given the complex and multidimensional nature of the problem, an interdisciplinary approach is proposed, involving different kinds of specialists, including biomedical engineers, industrial designers, psychologists, educators, and chemical engineers. Implementation will involve 5 different interrelated projects: (1) Interactive school desks for the educational inclusion of disabled children. (2) Proposal to develop technological environments involving games and toys for the social inclusion of disabled people. (3) Development of interactive didactic material to teach science to people with visual disabilities. (4) Didactic strategies and use of interactive material to develop reasoning skills in young people with intellectual disability. (5) Design of an instrument to evaluate the cognitive (intelligence) skills in blind children.

Involvement of the endogenous cannabinoid system in the regulation of the parietal cortex and its impact on the execution of a categorization task: The cannabinoid system has gained recent notoriety due to current discussions of the legalization of cannabis for recreational and medical purposes. This debate has led to uncertainty on the possible short-term and long-term repercussions of its consumption on human cognitive and emotional functions. Unfortunatelyly, because it is considered a drug, scientists have been unable to study the natural functions of the cannabinoid system and the impact of exogenous cannabinoids on this system. For a long time, it was believed that the effect of cannabinoids on the brain depended on the expression of CB1 receptors; however, the recent description of CB2 receptors in the brain has led to the reexamination of this previous work, in order to determine the relative involvement of each type of cannabinoid receptor in the observed behavioral effect. The purpose of this project is to explore the involvement of the cannabinoid system in the involuntary attentive process that is mediated by the parietal cortex. To achieve this, we propose to inject anandamide endogenous cannabinoids and 2 AG onto the parietal cortex of rats in order to evaluate their effect on an attentive task involving signal detection. We have the additional goal of evaluating the relative involvement of CB1 and CB2 receptors in the execution of the attentive task, for which we will employ antagonists of CB1 and CB2 receptors and observe their effects on the execution of the attentive task.
The effect of cannabinoid agonism on the expression of aggressive behavior and its effect on the serotoninergic system of rats: The regulation of emotion is a complex process. The adequate regulation of emotional behavior involves the participation of several brain structures that include the prefrontal cortex, the amygdala, the hippocampus, the hypothalamus, the anterior cingulate cortex, the insular cortex, and the ventral striatum. The amygdala is the structure responsible for coordinating the different components of an emotional response. We currently know that the activity of the amygdala is essential in learning about the stimuli associated with primary reinforcements or punishments, as well as about the regulation of aggressive conduct in both animals and humans. Recent evidence has shown that the use of agonists of the CB1 cannabinoid receptor reduces aggressive behavior in mice; research has also shown that the cannabinoid system could be regulating the activity of several components of the serotoninergic system, such as the MAO A, the COMT, the 5 Hydroxytryptamine transporter, and the 5HT1B receptor. This project proposes evaluating the effect of the agonistic components of the cannabinoid system on aggressive behavior in rats and evaluating the activity of different components of the serotoninergic system (MAO A, COMT, the 5 Hydroxytryptamine transporter and 5HT1B) in different brain structures, such as the brain cortex, the amygdala and the raphe nuclei.

Cognitive function, neurogenesis, and gene and protein expression in the hippocampus of old rats (>9-11 months) after chronic exposure to sexual activity: Aging is closely related to cognitive deterioration, which gradually decreases memory, attention, and planning skills, as well as inhibition and the decision-making process, among other cognitive functions. These skills are evidently essential for individuals' adequate performance of both everyday tasks such as self-hygiene and self-care activities, and social activities such as a paying job. For many years, scientists have tried to understand the causes of this age-related cognitive deterioration, for the purpose of finding viable preventive and corrective treatment alternatives. Neuroscientists have found that, among other factors, the specific deterioration of memory skills is associated with neuronal death and the decrease in the rate of neuronal birth, or neurogenesis, in the hippocampus. Furthermore, they have found that activating the neurons of this structure facilitates or promotes neurogenesis, which decreases cognitive deterioration, especially in terms of memory tasks. In this sense, it is known that sexual activity promotes neuronal proliferation in the hippocampus. This would constitute evidence that sexual activity by itself is enough to protect against age-associated cognitive deterioration; however, there are methodological problems, such as the inadequate selection of appropriate control groups (social stimulus, sexual stimulus without the possibility of interacting, etc.), which raises doubts about previously reported results. This research is aimed at solving the methodological problems of these previous works by using adequate controls; its also proposes to look for the genes that are expressed in this type of activity and how this gene expression alters protein synthesis in the hippocampus, all of this by subjecting the experimental subjects to behavioral tasks that allow for an evaluation of their cognitive response, particularly in terms of memory.
Neuroprotective and behavioral effects of a soy isoflavone-enriched diet in rats after chronic intermittent exposure to toluene. The abuse of inhalants is associated with high levels of toxicity, the most significant effect possibly being extensive and lasting brain damage caused by chronic exposure to inhalants. However, this damage to cognitive functions is not permanent, and it can become partially restored if consumption stops for a prolonged period of time. This process could likewise benefit from a flavonoid-enriched diet, and even though flavonoids have been widely studied, they have not been studied in relation to the deterioration caused by chronic exposure to inhalants. The present study is aimed at analyzing the influence of a soy isoflavone-enriched diet in subjects with cognitive deterioration caused by chronic exposure to inhalants on memory-related tasks, such as the Morris water maze. Moreover, differences could arise in terms of the effectiveness of such a diet depending on the supplement dose; thus, this study also proposes evaluating the differences in the execution of subjects consuming diets with a maximum or minimum level of isoflavone enrichment.
Effects of the temporary manipulation of the opioid and dopaminergic systems on sexual behavior: This project stems from the need for an objective and simultaneous study of the appetite (motivation) and consummation (execution) elements of sexual behavior, particularly in sexually-naïve animals. The study also stems from an interest in explaining the role of the dopaminergic and opioid systems in the development of initial couplings, both in the appetite and consummation phases, which is addressed by recording the effects of the intracranial administration of haloperidol (dopaminergic antagonist), bromocriptine (dopaminergic agonist) naltrexone (opioid antagonist), and methadone (opioid agonist) on the sexual motivation and execution of sexually-naïve male rats.

Systematization of good practices in the reconstruction of the social fabric:
The case of a civil association in Ciudad Juarez: This project is aimed at understanding the process of the reconstruction of the social fabric from a psychosocial approach, through the systematization of the significant practices of a civil association, based on the interaction of the following dimensions: community resiliency, culture of peace, grieving processes, and life meaning, in order to favor the understanding the psychosocial processes of change in a context of poverty and violence.
Families, gender and migration: a psychosocial perspective:
Currently, migration is one of the most intensely-debated global phenomena, and the complexity of its study has surpassed the limits of single-cause explanations in the emergence new international scenarios. However, despite the growing interest in the issue of population mobility, there is a general lack of information and knowledge about the psychological consequences of migration in the families involved, and a lack of understanding of the effects of migration on families when one of the members or all of them migrate to the United States, or in cases of deportation. Our research question is: how has the international migration process influenced Mexican families in terms of their identity and relationships? And, how are these changes and continuities associated with vulnerability and coping processes of these families, on both sides of the country's northern border?

Art Therapy and Psychoeducation:
Validation of an intervention methodology for addressing social problems: This is a line of work that seeks to have an impact on issues that certain communities in conditions of vulnerability express as common to their experience, ranging from promoting social participation to forming self-sustaining work groups. It is based on taking Art Therapy techniques without doing therapy, in order to design interventions with a therapeutic purpose: to address specific situations and needs, and/or to generate work groups and point them toward shared objectives. The working protocol consists of previous training in the principles of community psychology, the guidelines and advantages of group work, the theoretical underpinnings of art therapy as a psychological approach, the use of sources of scientific information to contextualize the casesm and the model proposed by Dr. Landgarden (in Los Angeles, CA) as adapted by Dr. Ojeda (in Mexico). These principles are then applied, depending on each case, to an eclectic methodological design. Issues that have been addressed under this format, and for which there are publications, include the migration process, strengthening couple relationships, childhood obesity, limits at home, identity, sense of community, etc. On occasion the format has called for collaboration with other departments, including Health and Art History (Ibero).
Poverty and resiliency in semi-urban and urban areas of Mexico (to address our commitment to the project with IIDSES):
This line of work aims at identifying the possibilities of developing resiliency at the individual, family, social and community levels in different urban and semi-urban areas of both Mexico City and other parts of the country that have been categorized by national authorities as areas of extreme poverty, in order to then design strategies that will multiply the strengths and resources found in order to reinforce these communities by designing interventions aimed at training community leaders as social change promoters.
Validation of the Attachment-Detachment Scale:
This project takes as its model the styles of attachment that have been upheld in the literature for years as forming the basis for any kind of meaningful relationship— interpersonal, romantic or based on our social role (at work, in the study program, etc.)— to the extreme of living only in that relationship and neglecting other areas that contribute to quality of life, the development of the whole person, and life satisfaction. The objective is to generate bases for redirecting achievements and redefining goals in people and in groups by learning to attach as a way to generate growth in others, but knowing how to detach in order to grow in the sense of human development, to rediscover oneself and learn to respect one's essence, one's self.

- Migration of children and adolescents
- Return migration, deportation and social reintegration
Current migration policies between Mexico and the United States have an impact on the mental health and the dynamics of families that experience this phenomenon, exposing their members to conditions of vulnerability and risk due to their undocumented migration status. These families are forced to separate because of migration, and are constantly trying to reunite, which leads to the migration of children and adolescents, deportation, violence, and sometimes turns them into crime victims, which has a severe impact on their physical and emotional health, as well as their social environment.

Application of social sciences to the solution of mental and public health issues: I chose the social actor approach because, in my experience, it can provide perspectives, points of view, and reflections about health that more structured methods often overlook. My theoretical interest lies in Social Interfaces, which require the use of qualitative methods.
Furthermore, in the case of local problems that cannot wait for public policies to provide a sustainable and culturally feasible solution, I feel that participatory methods are the most adequate and I am interested in developing these kinds of methods.
I also have experience working with decision-makers, as their importance cannot be denied.
As the interest of social psychology consists of studying human interactions, I have qualitative research experience working with street children and those who try to help them, indigenous children with malnutrition problems, as well as with lactating mothers and their relationships with health personnel.
My main research interest consists of studying exclusive breastfeeding. This is the best way to feed children between the ages of 0 to 6 months, and also the least common in Mexico. I know the obstacles for exclusive breatfeeding in Mexico, and they include cultural, mental and social factors. There has been great progress in individual cases, but in the Public Health sector, the prevalence is minimal and unacceptable. We need to identify these obstacles and come up with ways to overcome them. My research interest consists of contributing to solving these problems.

Experiences and repercussions of high-impact crime and other incidents:
This project is aimed at identifying the psychological and social processes and effects that result from the experience of high-impact crimes, for the purpose of generating intervention proposals for both direct and indirect victims.
Crime rates in our society, particularly certain forms of criminal activity, are on the rise. The effects of these crimes go beyond the moment in which they occur and the specific victim they target. Proximity to the victim, the presence of crime in the media, rumors, and other factors contribute to the broadening of crime's impact and the generation of feelings of insecurity and fear of crime. As a result, we have discovered that certain habits have been modified: there has been an increase in security measures, and even recently, of reactive measures against criminal offenders and people suspected of criminal intent. Hence, these crimes impact both the victims and society at large.
It is therefore important to understand the psychosocial effects of crime on both the direct and the "second-hand" victims.
Social media and victimization:
This project is aimed at identifying the factors that attract criminals and the process of victimization through social media and the Internet in adolescents and young adults, for the purpose of generating prevention strategies.
Technology and social media have produced many benefits, including the instant transfer and exchange of information even between individuals on opposite sides of the globe. These social networks have become an important medium to socialize, meet new people, and start relationships; however, they have also been used for pernicious purposes. We find criminal groups and people who take advantage of different factors that attract criminals, such as users' lack of experience, their need for affection, the anonymity that the internet enables, or the possibility of creating an entire personality, among others, to capture and victimize people. Children, adolescents, and young adults are vulnerable sectors of the population, as they recurrently use social media and the internet to meet people and are sometimes contacted by people involved in child pornography, kidnapping, human trafficking, among other activities. This makes it essential to understand how these sectors of the population use social media, how they perceive the risks, and what preventive measures they employ.
Partner violence: men who suffer violence:
The purpose of this project is to understand the factors that facilitate intimate partner violence by women against men, in order to generate preventive and intervention strategies. When speaking about intimate partner violence, we generally think about heterosexual couples in which the man is violent toward the woman. However, we must consider that there are same-sex couples, and that also women can also act violently toward men. For many reasons, including cultural factors, we find it difficult or improbable to think of a man suffering violence at the hands of his female partner; however, it is a situation that has become increasingly visible. Without downplaying violence against women, we must also consider the intimate partner violence that affects men in order to understand it and prevent it, since the healthy development of individuals, couples, and families calls for the complete eradication of all forms of domestic violence. For this reason, we must learn and understand the processes and forms of intimate partner violence perpetrated by women against men.
