José Francisco Cervantes Alvarez .Phd.
Doctoral Program Chair
The faculty of ITESO's PhD Program in Engineering Sciences is made up of professors with well-established careers in research and self-management, with proven experience in managing external financial resources in the form of research grants from the government as well as from regional industry.
In most cases, the doctoral thesis director is a full-time professor at ITESO. However, this PhD program encourages the possibility of industry researchers with a PhD co-directing, together with a full-time professor, students' doctoral dissertations.

Dr. Mildreth Isadora Alcaraz-Mejía
PhD in Electrical Engineering with specialization in Computer Science (CINVESTAV-IPN). Member of the Mexican National System of Researchers (SNI). She has published numerous scientific articles internationally refereed, book chapters, and one published patent in USA. Her research areas include discrete event systems, embedded systems, distributed and parallel systems, and artificial intelligence. Since 2013, she coordinates the postgraduate program in Computer Systems at ITESO, with an accreditation in the PNPC of CONACYT as an Industry Oriented Program.
Dr. Elsie Evelyn Araujo-Palomo
PhD in Sciences and Materials Engineering from the Autonomous University of San Luis Potosí. Candidate to the Mexican National System of Researchers (SNI). She has several publications in indexed journals with high impact factor. Her current research is focused on the study and development of advanced materials for novel applications exploiting nanotechnologies.
Received his PhD degree in physics from the University of Paris XI, Orsay, France, in 2009, with a specialization in the field of nanomagnetism and semiconductor devices. Member of the Mexican National System of Researchers (SNI). He is author of several articles published in JCR indexed journals in the fields of advanced solar cells and infrared detectors. His current research interest focuses on nanostructures for terahertz electronics, energy harvesting applications and plasmonics.
Dr. Zabdiel Brito-Brito
PhD in Signal Theory and Communications from the Polytechnic University of Catalonia, Spain. Member of the Mexican National System of Researchers (SNI). He has over 10 years of teaching experience and numerous scientific publications. His main lines of research are the design and optimization of high-speed interconnection devices and circuits, and reconfigurable, microwave, and RF systems.
Dra. Gabriela Calvario Sánchez
PhD in Informatics Engineering from the University of the Basque Country in Spain (Euskal Herriko Unibertsitatea; UPV/EHU). Master's Degree in Space Science and Technology, focusing on the field of satellite image processing, from the EspaZio Gela Observatory Classroom of the Faculty of Engineering of Bilbao. She has published peer-reviewed articles on the areas of remote sensing, image processing, automatic learning, pattern recognition, data mining and computer vision.
Dr. José Francisco Cervantes-Álvarez
PhD in Electrical Engineering with specialization in Computer Science from CINVESTAV-IPN, Guadalajara. Candidate to the Mexican National System of Researchers (SNI). He has published numerous scientific articles internationally refereed. His research areas include multi-agent systems, distributed problems of constraints satisfaction, and pattern recognition. He currently coordinates the graduate program in Engineering Sciences at ITESO.
Dr. José Luis Chávez Hurtado
PhD in Engineering Sciences from ITESO – the Jesuit University of Guadalajara, Mexico. He has over 7 years of teaching experience and numerous scientific publications. His research area includes surrogate modeling and optimization, mainly applied to high frequency structures in the frequency domain, and forecasting techniques for economics time series.
Dr. Luis Enrique González-Jiménez
PhD and Master's Degree in Electrical Engineering Sciences from CINVESTAV-IPN, Guadalajara. He has published numerous internationally peer-reviewed articles in conferences and journals. His lines of research include robust nonlinear control, vision-guided robotic systems, and embedded control systems.
Dr. Luis Julián Domínguez Pérez
PhD from the Faculty of Engineering and Computing of Dublin City University. Level-1 researcher in the National System of Researchers (SNI, in its initials in Spanish). He has published a number of peer-reviewed scientific articles. His area of research is quantum-proof cryptography, elliptic curves and their application in security protocols.
Dr. Luis Fernando Gutiérrez-Preciado
PhD and Master's Degrees in Electrical Engineering from CINVESTAV-IPN, Guadalajara. Candidate to the Mexican National System of Researchers (SNI). His areas of research include simulation of deformable objects, computer graphics, virtual reality, adaptive systems, as well as efficient analysis and storage of information for Big Data.
Dr. Omar Humberto Longoria-Gándara
PhD and Master's Degree in Electrical Engineering Sciences, with a specialization in Telecommunications, from CINVESTAV-IPM, Guadalajara. Member of the Mexican National System of Researchers (SNI). His areas of research are MIMO channel estimation, implementation of embedded communication algorithms for wireless communications and high-speed transmission lines, as well as digital algorithms using hardware description languages.
Dr. Esteban Martínez-Guerrero
PhD in integrated electronic devices from the National Institute of Applied Sciences of Lyon, France. Specialization in integrated circuit design from ITESO, Mexico. He has over 14 years of teaching experience and numerous scientific publications on semiconductor physics, electronic device design and modeling, and integrated analog circuit design.
Dr. Roberto Osorno-Hinojosa
Doctorate in Business and Economy from Ramon Llull University, Barcelona, Spain. He is Master in Applied Informatics from ITESO; his main research lines are Design and Management of Service Systems and Information Technology. He has more than 15 years of teaching experience and as Information Technology Manager. He currently manages the Service Science, Management and Engineering research team at ITESO.
Dr. Jorge Arturo Pardiñas-Mir
PhD in Telecommunications from the Télécom SudParis/ Université Pierre et Marie Curie Institute. He conducts research in ultra-wide band signals, and interior distance and location estimations. His areas of interest include wireless sensor networks and radio-over-fiber transmission.
Dr. Hugo Iván Piza-Dávila
PhD and Master's Degree in Electrical Engineering Sciences from CINVESTAV-IPN, Guadalajara. Member of the Mexican National System of Researchers(SNI). He has published numerous papers on different areas of computer science (programming, distributed systems, computer-based optimization methods, virtual environments, formal languages, and pattern recognition). He coordinates ITESO's Specialization in Computer Graphics for Videogames.
Dr. José Luis Pizano-Escalante
PhD in Electrical Engineering Sciences, with a specialization in Telecommunications, from CINVESTAV-IPN, Guadalajara. His areas of research include architectures for wireless communications systems, hardware implementation of algorithms for wireless communications and high-speed transmission lines, as well as digital design, computer architecture, and embedded systems.
Dr. José Ernesto Rayas-Sánchez
PhD in Electrical Engineering from McMaster University, Canada. Member of the Mexican National System of Researchers (SNI). Profesor Numerario (hons.) at ITESO, Chair of the CAD Technical Committee of the IEEE Microwave Society (MTT-1 on CAD), and Coordinator for Latin America of the IEEE MTT-S. His research focuses on the development of computer methods for modeling, design, and optimization of high-frequency electronic circuits, including high-speed interconnects, RF and microwave circuits. He directs ITESO's Research Group on Computer-Aided Engineering of Circuits and Systems (CAECAS).
Dr. Luis Rizo-Domínguez
PhD in Electrical Engineering Sciences from CINVESTAV-IPN, Guadalajara. Tenured Professor at ITESO. Member of the Mexican National System of Researchers (SNI). He has published peer-reviewed articles on non-stationary stochastic processes, and the analysis of time series with stable distributions.
Dr. Óscar A. Rojas-Rejón
PhD in Biotechnology with the specialty in Bioprocesses and Bioengineering from CINVESTAV – IPN, Zacatenco. Candidate for the Mexican National System of Researchers (SNI). He has several articles published in refereed international journals (JCR), as well as numerous participations in international conferences and a patent application in the areas of industrial and food biotechnology. His research focuses on metabolic regulation of industrial enzyme production by bacteria, generation of second and third generation biofuels (2ndGBF and 3rdGBF) from agroindustrial wastes and sewage water, as well as the sustainable generation of high value added metabolites under the biorefinery concept.
Dr. Riemann Ruiz-Cruz
Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering from CINVESTAV-IPN, Guadalajara. Member of the Mexican National System of Researchers (SNI). He is part of the Research Laboratory on Optimal Design, Devices, and Advanced Materials (OPTIMA), of the Department of Mathematics and Physics at ITESO. His current research interests include neural control, block control, inverse optimal control, and discrete-time sliding modes, and their applications to electrical machines and power systems. In addition, he specializes in data analysis through machine learning.
Dr. Ángel Samaniego-Alcántar
PhD in Business Studies from the University of Barcelona, specializing in applied mathematics to finance. He holds two master's degrees in finance, from the University of Comillas and the Pompeu Fabra University, respectively. He has published several scientific articles related to his lines of research in investment portfolio management and behavioral finance.
Dr. Juan Diego Sánchez-Torres
PhD and Master's Degrees in Electrical Engineering, with a specialization in Automatic Control, from CINVESTAV-IPN, Guadalajara. Member of the Mexican National System of Researchers (SNI). He has published numerous internationally peer-reviewed articles in conferences and journals. His research fields include variable structure systems with sliding modes and applications to robust control and on-line optimization.
PhD in Physics, with specialization in fabrication, characterization and modeling of nanostructured magnetic systems from the Instituto Balseiro, Argentina. He has fifteen years of teaching experience and over ten years researching systems with high technological potential, such as magnetic nanowires, magnetic thin films, magnetic nanoparticles, quantum dots, and antidots. He has numerous publications in international indexed journals as well as lectures at several international conferences. He is referee of the American Physical Society, in particular of Physical Review Letters. He is currently in charge of the atomic force microscope (AFM) of the Nanotechnology Laboratory at ITESO.
Dr. Iván Esteban Villalón-Turrubiates
PhD in Electrical Engineering Sciences from CINVESTAV, Guadalajara. He has published numerous specialized articles on digital signal and image processing. His area of expertise is the analysis, design, and optimization of processing systems with remote sensing applications. He is a senior member of the IEEE.
Dr. Víctor Hugo Zaldívar-Carrillo
PhD and Master's Degree in Science with a specialization in Artificial Intelligence and Cognitive Systems from the University of Montpellier II, France. He conducts research in the areas of semantic webs and intelligent agents, particularly in the development of search and semantic-analysis algorithms and tools for free-text files. He has a patent application in the United States. More than 25 years of teaching and research experience.

Dr. Víctor Avendaño-Fernández
PhD in Electronic Sciences from the National Institute of Astrophysics, Optics, and Electronics. He was a guest researcher at the Polytechnic University of Catalonia. He has numerous publications in peer-reviewed conferences and journals. With +10 years of experience in industry, he currently holds the position of System Validation Engineer at Intel Tecnología México SA de CV, in the Server Division. He also has experience on implementing and verifying test-oriented design (JTAG, SCAN, design for testability) of Intellectual Property (IP) blocks for their integration into multicore network processors. His line of research focuses on signal integrity verification in integrated circuits, and verification techniques for high-speed SerDes systems.
Dr. José Rodrigo Camacho-Pérez
Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering from CINVESTAV-IPN, Guadalajara and M.Sc. in Microwave Engineering from Moscow Aviation Institute, Russia (with Honors). He has 15 years of industry experience developing antennas and electromagnetic compatibility solutions for the Personal Computers and Automotive Industries. He has an international Patent issued, several patent applications, an Industrial Trade Secret and several international conference papers.
Dr. Edgar Colin-Beltran
He holds a PhD in Astrophysics from the National Institute for Astrophysics, Optics, and Electronics (INAOE, Puebla, Mexico). He was visitor researcher at the University of Cambridge, UK, where he was involved on the antenna design for a SKA radio telescope. After that time, he held the position of RF Hardware Engineer at Intel Labs, Guadalajara. His research areas are the design and implementation of RF passive devices. Edgar has been currently awarded with a CONACYT Cathedra assigned to INAOE in the Astrophysics Department devoted to the Large Millimeter Telescope instrumentation.
Dr. Héctor A. Cordourier-Maruri
PhD in Electrical Engineering with a specialization in Acoustics Instrumentation from the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM). His main areas of research are sound and vibration signal processing, active and passive noise control, speech recognition, and musical acoustics. He currently works as a Research Scientist at Intel Labs (Research & Development division) in Guadalajara.
Dr. Alberto De-Obeso-Orendáin
PhD in Artificial Intelligence and Cognitive Science from the University of Sussex, UK. He has more than 13 years of experience developing software and more than 5 years implementing data science-related projects. He has authored several publications, mainly related to cognitive modeling and the IEEE SmartCities initiative, and a patent application in the United States (20140207712). He is currently the Director of the Big Data department of the Guadalajara office of Intersys Consulting, an international firm focused on data centric solutions.
Dr. Carlos A. López
PhD in Mechanical Engineering and Master's Degree in Applied Mathematics from the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, New York. Post-doctorate from the Polytechnic University of Madrid, Spain. His areas of research include multi-physical systems using finite element, reduced-order modeling for linear systems, and optimization. He works as a scientific researcher at Intel Labs Guadalajara.
Dr. Rogelio López-Herrera
PhD and Master Degrees in Chemical Engineering and Energy Engineering, respectively, from the University of Illinois, Chicago. Master Degree in Quality and Applied Statistics from the Rochester Institute of Technology, New York. He has more than 30 years of experience in the films, metallurgical, and electronics industries. His research interests include transport phenomena, stochastic modeling, statistical methodology, design of experiments, and statistical process control.
Dr. Paulo López-Meyer
PhD in Electronics & Computer Engineering with a specialization in Biomedical Engineering from Clarkson University in New York, USA. He worked as a Post-doctorate fellow at The University of Alabama in Tuscaloosa, AL. He currently works at Intel Labs Guadalajara as a research scientist, and is a member of the National System of Researchers. His areas of expertise comprise signal processing, data analysis and machine learning applied to technology development of wearables, smart algorithms, bioengineering, and human-computer interactions.
Dr. J. Guadalupe Olascuaga-Cabrera
Sustaining Engineer of the Oracle cluster, at Oracle of Mexico, Guadalajara site. PhD and Master's Degree in Computer Science from CINVESTAV-IPN, Guadalajara. He has published several scientific journal articles, book chapters and papers at international conferences in the areas of distributed algorithms, wireless sensor networks, and optimization strategies.
Dr. Manuel Salim-Maza
PhD in Integrated Circuit Design from the National Institute of Astrophysics, Optics, and Electronics (INAOE, in its initials in Spanish). Engineer and analog design Technical Leader for Wipro and NXP. He has more than 10 years of teaching and professional experience, as well as numerous scientific publications. In addition, he have 3 years of experience in electrical verification of servers at Intel Corporation. His main lines of research are the design and optimization of high-performance circuits for SerDes systems, clock distribution, transmitters and I/Os, and videogame console design.
Dr. Román Salinas-Cruz
PhD and Master's Degree in Sciences with a specialization in Electronics from the National Institute of Astrophysics, Optics, and Electronics, Puebla. He has published articles in national and international conferences and journals. He currently works as an integrated analog circuit designer, with 9 years of experience in the industry and in the design of SerDes, with 90nm, 45nm, SOI, and 28nm technologies. His research focuses on sigma delta oversampling data converters with switched capacitors, and active filters in continuous time and discrete time.
Dr. Sergio Alfredo Solis-Bustos
PhD and Master's Degree in Electronic Science from the National Institute of Astrophysics, Optics, and Electronics (INAOE). He has published multiple specialized articles on the design of integrated circuits for medical and computer applications. He has more than 13 years of experience in the industry, working for Motorola of Mexico and Intel Technology Mexico.
Dr. Arturo Veloz-Guerrero
PhD in Communications from the Université de Paris Sud, Centre d'Orsay. Research manager for Intel Labs in the Guadalajara Design Center. He has published papers on different areas of engineering (digital signal processing, adaptive filtering, voice recognition, electronic design of integrated circuits, and imperfection compensation for RF transceivers). He has over 16 years of teaching experience, and has directed approximately 32 undergraduate, master's degree, and PhD dissertations.
Dr. Jorge Edgar Zárate-Roldán
PhD in Electrical Engineering from Texas A&M University, USA. He has worked as Design Engineer at Intel Labs in Guadalajara Design Center and at Intel Radio Integration Lab in Hillsboro, Oregon, USA. He has six years of experience in the semiconductor industry designing integrated circuits for wireless communications. He currently works for Aztlan Electronica Group SC and Cypress Semiconductor. His research interests include the design of efficient voltage regulators, low-power high-performance oscillators and their application in low-power and compact transmitters. He is author of multiple IEEE journal and conference papers.
