Faculty
The faculty of this degree program is made up of professors who belong primarily to the Habitat and Urban Development Department, as well as other departments at ITESO; some of them are members of the National System of Researchers (SNI, in its initials in Spanish), and others are prestigious national and international scholars with careers and experience in the field of sustainability.
Mónica Solórzano Gil, PhD (Coordinator)
PhD in Architecture (UNAM), Master's Degree in Architecture, Research and Restoration of Sites and Monuments (UMSNH), Bachelor in Architecture (ITESO). She is a professor at ITESO and leads the Professional Application Projects "Mariachi Greenway" and "Chapala Greenway". Lines of research: Industrial and railway heritage and culture, and the reuse and rehabilitation of heritage.
Yolanda Bojórquez Martínez, PhD
PhD in Social-Scientific Studies (ITESO), Master's Degree in Architectural Sciences (University of Guadalajara), Bachelor in Architecture (University of Guadalajara). She has been an academic at ITESO since 1995, with experience in the areas of architecture theory, history, and methodology. She has published books and articles on the construction of cities from a social standpoint.
Javier Esteban Clausen Silva, PhD (Advisor)
Master's Degree in Hydrogeological Sciences and Applied Geology from the University of Eberhard-Karls in Tübingen, Germany. Bachelor in Geological Sciences from the University of Buenos Aires, Argentina. He specializes in interdisciplinary approaches to environmental characterization, assessment and planning, the comprehensive management of water resources, corrective management of degraded sites, risk analysis, multicultural communication, and academic management and capacity building. He is a professor at ITESO and has been invited as a guest researcher by the University of Guadalajara. In the private sector, he has provided consulting services and conducted applied research.
Dr. Mara Cortés Lara (professor)
Bachelor's Degree in Architecture from the Universidad Veracruzana (2004), Master's Degree in Humanitarian Practices and Development from Oxford Brookes University in the United Kingdom, and PhD in City, Territory and Sustainability from the University of Guadalajara (2014). Deputy manager of Social Production and Housing and Coordinator of several low-income and indigenous housing projects at the Veracruz Housing Institute (2006 to 2009). Professor at the School of Architecture of the Universidad Veracruzana, Xalapa campus, where she taught courses on urban architectural research and urban planning (2009-2015). She has conducted and collaborated on several research projects for the Multidisciplinary Research Institute of the Universidad Veracruzana (2009-2015). In addition, she has worked as a freelance consultant for the Guadalajara Municipal Government in matters related to Urban Development (2014), and is a member of the Housing Network of the National Science and Technology Council (CONACYT) (2015). She has been speaker at different national and international academic conferences, and has authored a number of national and international publications.
Raúl Díaz Padilla, PhD (Professor)
PhD in Urban Studies (University College London). Coordinator of the UNESCO-ITESO Chair. Among his publications are the Compendium for planning BRT systems, volumes 1, 2, 3 and 4 (2008-2010) and Mobility: A strategic vision for the Metropolitan Area of Guadalajara (2001). He has given lectures around the country and abroad.
Rodrigo Flores Elizondo, PhD (Professor)
PhD in Social-Scientific Studies (ITESO). Master's Degree in Social Philosophy (ITESO) and Bachelor's Degree in Electronic Engineering (University de Las Americas). He is the coordinator of the Sustainability Program at ITESO. He belongs to the National System of Researchers (SNI, in its initials in Spanish). Lines of research: Socioeconomics and environment, social management of water, regional economic studies, education, and job markets.
Célida Isabel Gómez Gámez, PhD (Guest professor)
PhD in Urban Design and Master's Degree in Urban Planning from Oxford Brookes University and Bachelor in Architecture from ITESO. She currently works as a full-time researcher at the Department of Architecture of the Universidad Iberoamericana. She has extensive experience in urban design strategies and planning for the development of communities and sustainable public spaces that address the needs and demands of their users. She has acquired this experience by designing sustainable communities and low-income housing in the private sector, and by participating in programs related to urban regeneration and the improvement of public spaces through processes of community planning in the public sector. Lines of research: Urban Design and Planning, Participatory Planning Processes.
Alejandro Mendo Gutiérrez, PhD (Professor)
PhD in City, Territory and Sustainability (University of Guadalajara), Master's Degree in Local Research, Management and Development (Universidad Complutense), and Bachelor in Architecture (ITESO). He has been a research professor at ITESO since 1994. He is a member of the Technical Council of the Citizens' Observatory of Quality of Life in Jalisco "Cómo Vamos", the Guadalajara Metropolitan Observatory, and the United Nations Human Settlements Program (UN-Habitat), among others. Lines of research: Assessment of urban sustainability in human settlements.
Ana Rosa Olivera Bonilla, PhD (Guest professor)
PhD in City, Territory and Sustainability from CUAAD- University of Guadalajara (with recognition of excellence for her thesis) and Master's Degree in Urban Sciences and Development, CEMET-University of Guadalajara. She also studied a Master's Degree in Earth Architecture at the School of Architecture of Grenoble, France. She holds a Bachelor's Degree in Architecture from the University of Guadalajara. She has been on study periods in the cities of Grenoble, France and Santiago, Chile. Independent researcher: her main lines of research are related to the social construction of cities, public spaces, socio-spatial practices, and collective imaginaries. She has published articles in different journals: Ambiente y Comportamiento Humano, CON-TEXTO and Tophofilia. She teaches at the Centro Universitario de la Costa of the University of Guadalajara, the Universidad del Valle de Atemajac-Puerto Vallarta and the Universidad Vizcaya de las Américas-Manzanillo.
Sarah Alexandra Obregón Davis, PhD
PhD (Madrid School of Architecture, Polytechnic University of Madrid), Master's Degree in Urban Planning and Development Sciences (University of Guadalajara), and Bachelor in Architecture (ITESO). Researcher in the Department of Urban Planning and Zoning at the Polytechnic University of Madrid, and at the Center for Andalusian Studies of the Government of Andalusia. She has worked in several positions in the State Government of Jalisco and the Guadalajara City Government, as a specialist in the certification of Sustainable Urban Projects.
Dr. Adolfo Preciado Quiroz (Advisor)
Civil Engineer graduated with honors by the University of Colima (2004) and Master in Civil Engineering (Seismic Protection of Buildings) in 2007 by the same University. In 2011 obtained de double PhD degree in Civil Engineering by the University of Florence, Italy and the Technical University of Braunschweig, Germany in Risk Management of Natural and Man Induced Hazards on Structures and Infrastructure. In 2012 developed a two years Postdoctoral research stay at the University of Auckland, New Zealand about the seismic strengthening of historical buildings damaged by the 2010 and 2011 Canterbury earthquakes. From 2014 to the beginning of 2016 worked as a Professor-Researcher in the Polytechnical University of Guadalajara and recently is a Professor and Researcher in the DHDU of ITESO. Dr. Preciado has more than 10 years of research experience and belongs to the National System of Researchers (SNI).
Daniel Sardo, PhD (Professor)
Architect with a PhD in Economics, Territorial and Urban Development from the University of Ferrara, Italy. Bachelor in Architecture from the Universidad Católica de Córdoba, Argentina, where he also worked as a professor at their School of Architecture. Magister in Environmental and Territorial Policies for Sustainability and Local Development from the University of Ferrara, where he also belonged to the management team of the Master Eco-Polis. He has also worked as an International Consultant for municipal governments and as Coordinator of many Local and Urban Sustainable Development projects in Italy and Latin America. He has given lectures and seminars in Argentina, Chile and Italy about Local Sustainable Development, the interdisciplinary approach to urban and territorial issues, participatory governance, collective intelligence, and smart communities.
Xavier Vargas Beal, PhD (Advisor)
PhD in the Philosophy of Education, (ITESO), Master's Degree in Human Development (ITESO), Bachelor in Civil Engineering (University of Guadalajara). Lines of research: Epistemology of public spaces and the paradigms of habitat research.
Juan Manuel Velázquez Ramírez, PhD (Professor)
PhD in Social and Scientific Studies and Master's Degree in Communication from ITESO. Bachelor in Sociology from UNAM, 1979-1981. He has a certification in Popular Education from IMDEC, Carlos Núñez, in Guadalajara, Mexico, 1984-85. He also received formal broadcasting training from the Radio and Television System of Jalisco, 2004.
Carlos Mario Yory García, PhD (Guest professor)
Bachelor in Architecture (Universidad Javeriana, Bogota, 1984); Magister in Philosophy (Universidad Javeriana, Bogota, 1998); Expert in the Cooperation for the Development of Human Settlements in Latin America and Africa (Polytechnical University of Madrid, 2001); Doctor "Cum Laude" in Human Geography (Society and Territory Program. Universidad Complutense of Madrid, 2003, with a dissertation on public policies, social territorial construction, public participation, and comprehensive territorial development within the context of Latin American mega-cities as illustrated in the specific case of Bogota); Post-doctoral studies in Social Anthropology (Center of Research and Advanced Studies in Social Anthropology-CIESAS. Mexico. 2010-2011, with a final project addressing the Social Construction of Habitat in the urban contexts of Latin America).
Álvaro Morales Hernández, MS (Professor)
Bachelor in Architecture from the Instituto Tecnológico y de Estudios Superiores de Occidente (ITESO). In Spain, he studied a Master's Degree in Local Research, Management and Development at the Universidad Complutense of Madrid, as well as a Master's Degree in Cultural Management from the Instituto Universitario Ortega y Gasset, in the same city. He currently has his own architectural firm specializing in urban projects.
Gerardo Monroy Ramírez de Arellano, MS (Advisor)
Bachelor in Architecture from the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM, in its initials in Spanish), Master's Degree in Design with a specialization in new product development (MDNP) from the School of Art, Architecture and Design (CUAAD) of the University of Guadalajara. He currently works as the Director of Regulation and Territorial Planning for Population Centers at the Office of the Attorney for Urban Development of the State of Jalisco.
Pablo Vázquez Piombo, MS (Advisor)
