LINES OF GENERATION AND APPLICATION OF KNOWLEDGE
At ITESO we try to integrate the university's three substantive functions—formation, research and outreach—and bring them to bear on socially relevant issues, in order to both update and cultivate the particular disciplinary field in an ongoing way. Since the Doctorate is an interdisciplinary educational program, it is linked to the Research Programs of the following departments: Sociocultural Studies; Sociopolitical and Legal Studies; and Administration, Economics and Marketing. The lines of research of the three Elective Areas of the Doctorate (Communication, Culture and Society; Socioeconomic Dynamics; and Politics and Society), the Lines of Generation and Application of Knowledge, and the students' research projects must relate to the Research Programs of these departments.
The Lines of Generation and Application of Knowledge (LGAKs) and sub-lines, which encompass the work of professors and students, are the following:
LGAK: Area of Communication, Culture and Society
The overall object of study of the Area of Communication, Culture and Society includes the systems and processes of producing sense and meaning by which sociocultural identities are objectively constituted and expressed, and develop intersubjectively, i.e., manifestations that interlink the practices of a wide variety of social agents on the basis of the economic, political and symbolic dimensions of social life as interpreted by the agents themselves. The study of this overall object presupposes that, in a setting of accelerated development of complex digital technologies, subjectivization processes and practices are constructed and expressed in response to processes of collective action.
The sub-lines of research under this LGAK are:
Communication systems and social practices
Subjectivity and power
Communication, culture and science

LGAK: Area of Socioeconomic Dynamics
The core objective of the Area of Socioeconomic Dynamics is to generate knowledge about economic and social development, comprising general strategies and their transformation into public policy, as well as the structural evolution of the economy and of the socioeconomic modifications that it implies, at both the national and the regional/sectoral levels. The aim is to gain deeper understanding from a systemic and complex perspective in order to influence and generate better conditions for territorial planning and the creation and consolidation of alternative forms of economic activity that promote inclusive and sustainable well-being. The sub-lines of research under this LGAK are:
Socioeconomic development and employment
Vulnerability, social policy and macroeconomic policy
Intersectoral social innovation
Inequality, habitat and socio-environmental conflicts

LGAK: Area of Politics and Society
The aim of the Area of Politics and Society is to generate research on both the political and politics. In the former case the analysis focuses on the public and juridical institutions, as well as the actions of the State, while the latter case focuses on the practices of different actors who have an impact on power relations. It considers the context marked by profound social and political changes in Mexico and the world that define today's sociopolitical dynamics: the disenchantment with democracy, the intrusion of transnational powers, the resurgence of populisms, and the emergence of anti-globalization and anti-immigration governments, as well as of different local and global social movements. These events pose new challenges for the State and its initiatives, the role of public institutions and the administration of justice, respect for human rights, and the practices of actors who have an impact on power relations. The sub-lines of research within this LGAK are:
Rule of law
Political processes and institutions
Public policy and public administration
Global and local institutions, norms, and actors
